What can you steam clean, and what should you not?

The short answer

Steam suits sealed, water-tolerant surfaces such as tile and grout, stainless steel, glass, sealed floors and many fabrics in light passes. Skip it, or test a hidden spot first, on unsealed or waxed wood, delicate fabrics like silk, and anything labelled not water-safe.

The rule that covers everything

Kärcher, a maker of home steam cleaners, says treatment with a steam cleaner should be avoided on heat-sensitive materials. For fabric, the New Mexico State University extension says to read labels and hang tags for specific care, and to pretest in an inconspicuous spot for discolouration, surface damage, or colour fading or running.

Two habits cover most of the risk: read the label, and test a hidden spot. Keep in mind that manufacturer lists describe their own home machines. Other equipment and settings differ, which is why the test still matters.

Generally safe to steam

  • Tile and grout. Kärcher lists tile floors and grout lines. The Tile Council of North America (TCNA) says that if conventional cleaning fails, you may want to try steam, because some stains that do not respond to conventional cleaners come clean with pressurized steam. Cement-based grout is porous, so keep moisture light.
  • Natural stone and sealed wood floors, on a low setting. Kärcher lists both, with an exception for waxed or unsealed floors. For sealed wood and laminate it advises the lowest steam setting, short bursts and no puddles.
  • Stainless steel, chrome and glass. Kärcher lists glass doors and glass-ceramic hobs, and its applications page suggests the detail nozzle on chrome or stainless steel fittings to avoid scratching them. Steam does not streak stainless steel.
  • Kitchen hard surfaces. Kärcher lists stuck-on dirt on the stove, grill and oven racks, and the fridge door jamb.
  • Car plastics and leather. Kärcher lists dashboards, consoles, cup holders and steering wheels, and says "plastic or leather only, not cloth" for its home units. Our guide on steam and leather car seats covers the low-moisture approach.
  • Fabric upholstery and mattresses that tolerate water, in a light pass. Kärcher says only the surface of upholstered furniture and mattresses should be treated, so that any residual moisture can dry fully. The NMSU extension says to use as little moisture as possible on upholstered articles.

Avoid, or test first

  • Unsealed or waxed wood floors. Kärcher does not recommend steam for waxed or unsealed floors, and for laminate or parquet it adds "not oiled or waxed".
  • Heat-sensitive materials. Kärcher says to avoid them. Delicate fabrics such as silk are the obvious candidates, so check the label and test first, or leave them alone.
  • Silicone grouting and sealant. Kärcher says to apply steam only briefly to avoid damaging the material.
  • Anything labelled not water-safe or dry-clean only. Steam is still heat and moisture, so follow the label.
  • Unsealed or cracked stone, and grout with missing sealer. Porous material takes up water, so we use a lower setting and keep moisture to a minimum.
  • Clothing. Kärcher does not recommend steam cleaning clothes with its SC cleaners and suggests a dedicated garment steamer instead.
  • Fabric car seats with a home machine. Kärcher's car list for its home units stops at plastic and leather, so go lightly or get help on cloth seats.

A test-spot routine

  1. Read the care label or manual. If it says not to wet clean, stop there.
  2. Pick a hidden spot, such as the underside of a cushion, a seam, or a corner behind the furniture.
  3. Use the lowest steam setting, one short pass, and a white microfibre cloth so any colour transfer shows.
  4. Once it is dry, look for discolouration, surface damage, or colour fading or running, the three things the NMSU extension names.
  5. Carry on only if the spot looks unchanged.

How much moisture is too much

Steam is mostly heat with little water, but you can still overwet a surface by holding the nozzle in one place. Health Canada says mould will begin to grow in an area with excessive moisture within 48 hours. Kärcher's advice for floors is to release steam in short bursts, keep the nozzle moving and not create puddles.

The same habits apply on upholstery, carpet and car interiors. Work in short passes, wipe with microfibre as you go, and open a window or door so the surface dries.

Where Steam Shines fits

We use high-temperature steam with no harsh chemicals. Leather, vinyl and delicate fabric get a lower-moisture setting, we avoid direct steam on unsealed wood, and on unsealed or cracked stone we use a lower setting and keep moisture to a minimum. Steam does not etch stone.

Quick answers

Short answers to common questions.

Only sealed ones, on a low setting. Kärcher does not recommend steam for waxed or unsealed floors, so check how your floor is finished first.

Yes on stainless steel, because steam does not streak it, and steam does not etch stone. Unsealed or cracked stone needs a lower setting and minimal moisture.

Many fabric sofas, yes, in a light pass, because steam uses very little water. Check the care label, test a hidden spot first, and leave delicate fabrics such as silk alone.

Yes. The New Mexico State University extension advises pretesting any cleaning method in an inconspicuous spot, and it is a small step that protects any surface you have not steamed before.

More guides

  • Does steam kill dust mites?

Yes, steam kills dust mites. In lab tests a steam cleaner left no live mites in treated carpet and mattress fabric, and it cut the allergen they leave behind, though clearing all of it can take repeat passes.

  • Is steam cleaning safe for leather car seats?

Yes, when it is done on a low-moisture setting with a microfibre cloth and the leather is in sound condition. The risk is too much heat and water, so the steam should be light and wiped off straight away.

  • How to get road salt stains out of car carpet

Dissolve the salt and lift it out. Vacuum the dry crust, dampen the stain with warm water, blot or extract the water away, repeat until the white ring stops coming back, then dry the carpet fully.

  • Is grout cleaning worth it?

Usually yes, when the grout is intact but stained or mouldy: cleaning restores the colour and sealing helps keep it that way. If the grout is cracked, crumbling or loose, cleaning will not fix it and regrouting is the right job.

  • How often should you deep clean carpet?

The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends a professional deep clean every 12 to 18 months, and Shaw says anywhere from 6 to 18 months depending on traffic. Pets, children and busy hallways point to the shorter end.

  • How to clean a greasy range hood filter

Take the filter out, soak it in warm water with dish detergent for 15 to 20 minutes per side, scrub gently with a soft brush, then rinse and dry it fully. Many metal filters can also go in the dishwasher if your manual allows it.

  • Move-out cleaning checklist for Ontario homes

Clean the empty home room by room, top to bottom: kitchen including appliances, bathrooms, floors and baseboards, closets, doors, handles and switches, then interior windows and sills. Do the floors last, once nothing else is left to drop dust or water on them.
