Bramalea was started in 1958 as a master-planned community, and Peel Village followed in the early 1960s with bungalows, side-splits and two-storey homes. Plenty of those houses have been lived in for a long time, and carpet that has been underfoot for years holds far more than the surface shows.

A large rug in the living room is the hardest item in the house to clean well on your own, and the one most people put off. It is heavy, awkward to lift and slow to dry if you soak it. Cleaning it in place with steam avoids the lifting and keeps the water to a minimum.

The entrance deserves its own thought in a Brampton winter. Salted slush from the driveway and the street is carried in on boots and ends up in the first metre of carpet or the rug by the door, where it dries into pale marks. Steam loosens that salt and grit so microfibre can lift it.
